Welcome to the SKOAP Study

Learn how SKOAP clinical trial participants are helping advance science and improve outcomes in people with Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) pain.

What Is the SKOAP Study?

The SKOAP Study is a Sequenced strategy for improving outcomes in people with Knee OsteoArthritis Pain (SKOAP). It is a national study funded by The Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative®.

SKOAP compares non-opioid pain treatments with the goal of reducing KOA pain and improving function to find out what treatments work best for which patients.

SKOAP participants may also earn up to $550 for completing study activities.

As of October 2024, SKOAP is no longer enrolling new participants. If you are an existing participant in the SKOAP study, your status is not affected.

Minimum Requirements for the Study

Be 18 years or older

Be diagnosed with Knee Osteoarthritis in at least one of your knees

Experienced pain in that knee for most days in the past 3 months

Willing to travel to one of our 15+ SKOAP Study locations nationwide

SKOAP Study participants will be randomized into one of three treatment arms. These are typically covered by insurance, but you will have to pay your usual copay. Are you comfortable using your insurance for SKOAP Study treatments?

Patients who met the above conditions were eligible to qualify for the SKOAP Study. As of October 2024, the SKOAP Study is no longer enrolling new participants.

What Is Knee Osteoarthritis?

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) occurs when the cartilage that cushions your knee joint wears down with time or from trauma.

Is the SKOAP Study Covered by Insurance?

Most insurance companies approve and cover our study procedures. There may be a copay that candidates will be responsible for.

That said, insurance coverage does vary by region and company. For specific questions, call the project coordinator at the closest SKOAP Study location using the contact information on the About Us page.

The SKOAP Study is a multi-site study, coordinated by principal investigators at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.
